The theme for this year’s conference “BUILDING SUSTAINABLE OUTCOMES FOR THE LEGAL PROFESSION IN EAST AFRICA”, has been carefully selected to provide a platform for legal professionals across the region to discuss strategies that will guarantee the sustainability of the legal profession in a disruptive and ever changing environment.

The following sub-themes shall be explored, in addition to the main theme:

  1. “Trade and Regional Integration: The Promise of Regional and Continental Trade Pacts” seeks to look at regional and international agreements, the opportunities they present to lawyers and how lawyers can take advantage of such opportunities. Key among these is the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACfCTA), the EAC Treaty and Protocols allowing from free cross-border movement of people, goods, services and capital.
  2. ‘‘Law Tech and the Future of the Legal Profession’’ will look to discuss the increasing influence of legal tech on legal practice and how lawyers can best future proof their practice in light of emerging practice areas and tech driven practice models.
  3. “Rule of Law and Development in the East African Community” will examine the various facets of Rule of Law and how they impact on development of our nations. Chief Justices and Attorneys General will get a chance to dissect some of the most pressing rule of law issues in the region. Various other topical areas including, sustainable and responsible business, illicit financial flows/money laundering and recent geopolitical developments in the region will be looked at.
  4. ‘‘Disruption, Innovation and Reinvention: The Legal Profession in East Africa Post COVID-19’’ will provide a platform for legal professionals across East Africa to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to the legal services market and how to best reengineer themselves in the face of such disruptive situations to ensure continued relevance and survival in an ever-changing world.
